Srinagar Garhwal

Srinagar is the largest city in Garhwal Himalayas, situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River. Srinagar caters a large number of tourist inflow every year and the majority of them are during Char Dham Yatra. The Srinagar Garhwal city is Situated in Pauri District in the State of Uttarakhand in Northern India. The place is centrally located from Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Tehri Gharwal and Badrinath. The place was once the capital of the Kings of Garhwal. The name of the place is derived from the Srixantra chunk where people were sacrificed to death to satisfy the heavenly power. The convention of killing people was stopped by Ali Guru Sankaracharya by throwing the chunk into the river Alakhnanda. Today, Srinagar is a major economic, cultural, and educational center in the region.

History and Legends Of Srinagar

After Becoming the Garhwal Kingdom, Srinagar came into the limelight. King Ajay Pal has founded the Garhwal kingdom during 1506-1512 CE and shifted the capital to Srinagar place from Chandpur Garhi. The Gorkhas defeated the Nepali king and occupied Kathmandu. The Srinagar was under Gorkha rule from 1806 to 1815 CE. After the Gorkhas were Defeated by the British, Srinagar becomes a part of British Garhwal. The old Srinagar city was destroyed in the Gohan Lake dam-burst which destroyed all the old relics of the town. Today the town is an important cultural and educational center. Being placed in central Garhwal at a moderate height, it is an important Valley Bazar in the hills. It has a number of temples and monuments and places for tourists to stay.

• Dhari Devi Temple: This sacred temple is situated between Srinagar and Rudraprayag on the banks of the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state. This temple has so many religious values in peoples of Uttarakhand.
• Augustmuni:- This place has its name from Rishi Augustya who is one of the most respected Gurus of Hindus. It is a small town in Uttarakhand which is situated on the banks of river Mandakini.
• Chandrabadani Temple: The Chandrabadani Temple at Devprayag is dedicated to the Goddess of Shakti / Power. Outside the temple, one can find many old statues and iron Trishuls. One can get beautiful views of the Kedarnath and Badrinath peak from here
• Koteshwar Mahadev Temple:- It is situated 3 km from Rudraprayag city. This is the place where the Hindu Lord Shiva stopped for meditation on his way to Kedarnath.
• Raghunathji Temple: The Raghunathji Temple, dedicated to Lord Ram, is believed to be one of the oldest temples in India. The temple is pyramidal in shape and made of stone.

• Devprayag:- Devprayag is also known as Deoprayag, it is a small town which is situated near Rishikesh in the district of Pauri Garhwal of Uttarakhand state. It is situated at an elevation of 2,700 ft. above sea level. It is one of the most places oof Uttarakhand.
• Dashrathshila:-In Treta- Yug, Raja Dashrath father of Hindu Lord Rama did penance in this place. The seat of Dashrath is a small hillock called Dashrathachal Peak.
