Prettily placed in the convergence of the majestic rivers Mandakini and Alaknanda, Rudraprayag is the holy abode of Lord Shiva. It is one of the Panch Prayag of Alaknanda River. Alaknanda then proceeds towards Devaprayag where it joins with Bhagirathi River to form the river Ganges. Rudraprayag District was established on 16th September 1997. Internationally Known Shri Kedarnath Temple is at North, Madmaheshwar at east, Nagrasu at southern east, and Shrinagar at the extreme south. The holy Mandakini originated from Kedarnath is the main river of the district.
The popular belief among locals is that it was here that Lord Shiva in his Rudra incarnation had appeared before Narada. Another folklore is that this is the same place where Sati took her rebirth after her tragic death. Mythology/ Importance of Rudraprayag
According to some legends, this is the place where the famous Narad Muni who is a mythological character did penance here to appease Hindu God Shiva for learning and mastering the art of music. The Hindu Lord Shiva acknowledge this and blessed Nara Muni in his Rudra avatar.
