One more step forward is taken for Chardham rail link. Suresh Prabhu, Central Railway Minister laid the foundation stone 43,000 crore Chardham railway project final location survey in Badrinath. In order to provide railway connectivity to Chardham – Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd will do the final location survey for the railine to Chardham.
The futuristic and ambitious Chardham railway line project will promote pilgrimage and tourism in Uttarakhand. It will also ease the travel to major pilgrimages in the state visited by lakhs of devotees each year.
Along with tourism and employment generation, the project will provide safe and comfortable journey to Chardham. The project will use new age engineering technology to construct 328 kms of railway line which includes 21 new railway stations, 61 tunnels (279 kms) and 59 bridges.
Earlier in 2014-2015, Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd has undertaken a Reconnaissance Engineering Survey (REC) for rail connectivity to Chardham and submit the report in October, 2015. It recommends two take off rail heads at Doiwala for Gangotri-Yamunotri route and other at Karanprayag for Badrinath-Kedarnath.

For Gangotri and Yamunotri, the railway line will start from Doiwala near Dehradun, while for Kedarnath and Badrinath, it will start from Karnaprayag. According to officials of the Railway ministry the Doiwala-Gangotri line will be 131 km long and for Yamunotri another 22 km of tracks will be laid from Maneri. For Kedarnath, a 99 km rail link will be laid between Karnaprayag and Sonprayag and for Badrinath another 75 km long track will be laid between Karnaprayag and Joshimath.
