Due to heavy downpour a major bridge over Mandakni river between Sonprayag and Gaurikund has been washed away this evening. The bridge was located on the way to Kedarnath. The officials said that heavy rains have sent river Mandakini into spate, as a result of which the motorable bridge between Sonprayag and Gaurikund on the way to the Himalayan shrine has been washed away.
Rudraprayag District Magistrate Raghav Langer said however, his event did not resulted into a fatal incident as the vital bridge was used for vehicular traffic on the way to Kedarnath shrine. DM ordered that vehicular traffic will not be allowed to go beyond Sonprayag and the journey will resume after sometime.
The pilgrimage to Kedarnath was postponed earlier today because Rudraprayag district was experiencing heavy rainfall since last night. The MET Department gave a warning that freshnet and landslides may occur for the next 48 hours in the high altitude areas of the state. Meanwhile, SDRF stated that its personnel rescued over 400 pilgrims who were devastated due to heavy rainfall at different yatra routes and move them to safety.
