Kedarnath is not only reeling under dipped mercury conditions but also bearing wrath of high prices of raw material required for rennovation of holy shrine. The building components, even a brick is costing as pricy as Rs 150 per piece which is three times higher than market price.
This has forced the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), tasked with the rebuilding of Kedarnath, to procure hi- tech machines to churn out over ten lakh bricks and tiles for construction of over 300 new structures in the Kedarnath valley.
NIM Chief, Col Ajay Kothiyal said, “The required raw materials, including bricks is expensive because of the altitude and treacherous terrain”. At present, bricks are being transported using mules from Sonprayag. Because of the 20 km long stretch the prices go even higher. So, we are planning to buy machines for making bricks and tiles, that will help in the construction work.
A Pune-based company has been contacted to supply and install hi-tech hydraulic machines costing almost Rs. 30 lakh. The special latest technology machines hold capacity to function even at such a high altitude without any glitch. According to NIM, the cost of making a brick using these machines would be as low as Rs 45 – which would give it a price edge over market rates.
The requirement of approximately 5 lakh bricks has been estimated in the rennovation process. The overall cost of rebuilding Kedarnath is over Rs 2,000 crore which includes a ropeway project to provide last mile connectivity to the holy shrine. Besides, houses, cottages, shops, and public utilities are also planned to be rebuilt in what is pegged as one of the biggest reconstruction exercises in the hill state’s history.
