Tehri (New Tehri) is a city and a municipal board in Tehri Garhwal District in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. New Tehri is the town created after the Old Tehri drowned due to Tehri Dam. The gushing Bhagirathi which runs through seems to divide the district into two, while the Bhilangna, Alaknanda, Ganga and Yamuna rivers border it on the east and west. There are many temples that can be found and some of them are, Ragunathji Temple, Surkhanda Devi Temple and many others. There are many picnic sites that can be found in and around the area of the town. Some of them are Dhanulti and Dev Prayag. New Tehri tourism has various attractions which can easily attract to anybody. First of all, New Tehri town is a hill station and has lot of tourism aspects for example ‘Tehri Lake’ also known as ‘New Tehri Dam’ is one of main attraction of the city. Bhagirathipuram and Badshahithaul are some other places to visit in the town. The New Tehri Town has two main markets, Bourari Market and Kulna Market (New Tehri Market). There are good New Tehri hotels which have good facilities with good cuisine.
History and Legends
The Old Tehri town is located at the the confluence of two Holy River Bhagirathi and Bhilanga at the site of Tehri Dham. The term Tehri derived from Trihari means Signifying a place that washes away the three types of sins – sins born out of Mansa, Vacha and Karmana or thought, word and deed, respectively where as Garh means fort in Hindi Language. Tehri was made up of many small forts which were ruled by chieftains. Therefore, the history of Garhwal before the dynastic rule of the ‘ Panwar’ rulers was not known. Kanak Pal was the first ruler of the state of Garhwal in 823 AD. There are trekking spots that are located in the surrounding areas and are a good place to visit during the summer.

Tehri is accessed if you are travelling from Uttarkashi in order to reach Kedarnath during your Char Dham Yatra. People who are visiting the place for religious purposes are can visit the various temples and shrines that can be seen in and around the area of New Tehri. Tehri’s is surrounded by neighbouring districts such as Uttarkashi , Chamoli , Pauri , Rudraprayag and Dehradun . There are many Festival and Fair held in Tehri District of Uttarakhand like Chandrabadani Fair , Kunjapuri Fair , Lakhwar Mela and Surkhanda Devi Fair. There are many Place to see near Tehri Town such as Chandravadni Devi Mandir, Koonjapuri Devi Mandir, Khait Parvat, Surkanda Devi Mandir, Dhanaulti, Chamba etc.
